Enterprise Architecture Practitioners' Conference – Paris

Objective of Meeting

The Enterprise Architecture Practitioners' Conferences are organized by enterprise architecture practitioners, for enterprise architecture practitioners, and for those directly involved in the management and oversight of enterprise architecture.

The Enterprise Architecture Practitioners' Conference in Paris addressed some of the key issues and challenges that face enterprise architects today. In this highly practical three-day conference and series of workshops, members of The Open Group and non-members alike came together to share insights and perspectives on best practices in enterprise architecture, and the key issues and challenges that enterprise architects face today.

The conference underlined the continuing role of The Open Group in providing a truly global forum in which enterprise architects from all sectors of the industry can come together to discuss best practice in enterprise architecture, hone their skills, find new ways to solve problems, share experiences, and learn from each other.

Summary

The agenda for this Enterprise Architecture Practitioners' Conference covered 71 individual presentations, structured into a plenary plus 18 streams across up to 4 parallel tracks. The event provided a wealth of current case study and tutorial material, summarized below.

The presentations referenced below are freely available only to members of The Open Group and conference attendees.

Day 1 – Opening Plenary
Enterprise Architecture – Driving Enterprise Transformation

The conference plenary focused on the key role of enterprise architecture in driving enterprise transformation. It analyzed how enterprise architecture can be used as a catalyst for achieving business advantage; reviewed experience to date, presenting a number of excellent case studies of enterprise transformation managed with an alignment of business goals and IT architecture; and discussed the maturity of enterprise architecture after years of functional architecture.

In so doing, it assisted CIOs, enterprise architects and strategists, senior managers, analysts, and industry experts in understanding the key role of enterprise architecture as a catalyst for enterprise transformation.

The plenary featured a number of important presentations covering case studies of enterprise architecture driving enterprise transformation:

  • Welcome Address
Allen Brown, President & CEO, The Open Group
  • Keynote: French Urbanism Welcomes Enterprise Architecture: The Alliance of Business Modeling and Architecture Governance to Drive Business Transformation
Eric Boulay, Président Directeur Général, Arismore opened the first day of the conference with a keynote address on "urbanism" as a key concept in the French IT industry, explaining the relevance to enterprise architecture. France has a long tradition in "urbanism" since late 1990s. This presentation compared the top-down French approach, from business perspective to the technical layers, and the bottom-up Anglo-Saxon approach typified by The Open Group work on TOGAF, which started from technical frameworks (prior to TOGAF 7) and migrated to a genuine EA framework.
  • How EA has Impacted Business Transformation in French Companies
Christophe Longépé, Group Enterprise Architecture Director, Societe Generale reviewed the key role of enterprise architecture as a catalyst for business transformation in French companies. After outlining the history of "IS Urbanism" as a discipline in France, and the roles of CIGREF and the Club Urba EA, Christophe provided an overview of the state of EA in French companies. He went on to explain the “EA Index” tool, which evaluates the maturity of the EA process in enterprises, and the results of a recent study based on a panel of French Companies using the EA Index, illustrating the current situation in France.
  • Enterprise Architecture to Serve Orange and its Business
Jean-Luc Lucas, Managing Director Service Platforms, France Telecom has spent most of his career with France Telecom Group. As Director responsible for the design and development of IT infrastructures and solutions, he was in charge of the ACHIMEDE program that rebuilt France Telecom's Information System using IP technologies. Jean-Luc is today a recognized expert on largescale IT projects and IS architecture. This presentation focused on the convergent Orange fix/mobile internet strategy, and showed how enterprise architecture is a powerful tool to realize the convergence of different existing services and to create new convergent services.
  • Enterprise Transformation Aligning Business Goals & IT Architectures
Marc Fiammante, Distinguished Engineer & Chief Architect, SOA Engagements, SOA Advanced Technology Team, IBM Software Group is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and world-wide chief architect of the SOA engagements delivered by IBM's SOA Advanced Technology field architect team. Marc reviewed a number of important SOA projects delivered in the past few years, focusing on the transition from a technical approach to a business approach, and linking the SOA approach to a maturity model. Finally, he described the method used to link business and IT, and gave a number of "anti-patterns" – approaches to avoid.
  • Taking Architecture to the Application Level
Junkyo (Jack) Fujieda, President & CEO, ReGIS Inc., a global research and consulting firm, leads all activities related to The Open Group in Japan. Jack gave a presentation explaining the need to take architecture from the (high) enterprise level to the application level.
  • The Bridge of Architecture and Implementation via Assurance of True Requirements
Kazuaki Minami, Senior Research Project Director, Automotive Software Platform & Development Process, Toyota-ITC (Japan) gave a presentation on the need to bridge architecture and implementation via the assurance of true requirements. Kazuaki has been responsible at Toyota for research into automotive software platforms and software development processes.
  • Enterprise Architecture and the use of Adaptive Technologies to drive Enterprise Transformation
Jean François Caenen, CTO, Capgemini (France); Mihai Moldovan, Product Manager, OSLO Software; James Odell, Consultant, IAI gave a joint presentation on how EA and the use of adaptive technologies can be used to drive enterprise transformation.
  • Enterprise Architecture Tools as a Catalyst for Business Transformation
Henry Peyret, Senior Analyst, Forrester Research presented the results of a recent Forrester research program into EA tools, and their use in driving business transformation.
  • Agile Enterprise Architecture for ERP
Ron Tolido, CTO Continental Europe & Asia Pacific, Capgemini; Franck Lopez, Global Director, Enterprise Architects Field Services, Global Strategic Initiatives, SAP gave a joint presentation on the SAP Enterprise Architecture Framework, which is an extension of the TOGAF architecture framework specifically designed to support the effective adoption of packaged solutions in the Service-Oriented Enterprise, and which had been the result of extensive collaboration between SAP, Capgemini and IDS Scheer.
  • Launch of the Organization Architecture Work Group
Allen Brown, President & CEO, The Open Group closed out the day by officially launching The Open Group Organization Architecture Work Group. Spearheaded by Capgemini and other platinum members of The Open Group, this initiative is working to provide a forum in which to explore Organization Architecture in business terms. An inaugural open meeting of the The Open Group Organization Architecture Work Group was announced for the Wednesday of this conference.

Days 2 and 3 – Conference Streams

The various conference streams delivered innovative viewpoints, practical insights, and case study presentations by a diverse range of EA professionals from both vendor and customer organizations.
