Introduction to TOGAF

Objective of Meeting

The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) is a comprehensive, industry standard framework and methodology for the design, evaluation, and implementation of enterprise architectures.

This Tutorial, which was open to all participants at the Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference, was given by Judith Jones and Simon Dalziel of Architecting the Enterprise Ltd. (UK). It gave a general introduction to The Open Group, described what the Architecture Forum has achieved so far with the development of TOGAF, and showed how the Forum is responding to the new challenges with the development of TOGAF 8 "Enterprise Edition".

Summary

Within the architecture domain, The Open Group has been active for over a decade, developing and making freely available an architecture framework and methodology - TOGAF. Developed by The Open Group Architecture Forum, TOGAF is today accepted and used around the world as an industry standard framework and method for enterprise architecture.

TOGAF has been and continues to be evolved within The Open Group Architecture Forum. Its development has been guided by and based on the knowledge and experience of members of The Open Group members who are practising architects working for a wide range of enterprises throughout the world.

This special pre-conference tutorial described the background to the evolution of TOGAF as a framework for developing architectures to meet the business needs of an organization, and its progression to TOGAF 8 "Enterprise Edition", with the increasing realization within the industry of the importance of enterprise architecture in the development of information systems. The tutorial described what the Architecture Forum has achieved so far in the development of TOGAF, and gave an overview of how the Forum is responding to new challenges with the development of TOGAF Version 9.

Outputs

Participants received an excellent overview of the TOGAF framework and its Architecture Development Method (ADM).

Next Steps

The tutorial was very well received, and will be repeated at future Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conferences. Additional tutorials will be included at future conferences, focusing on more specific aspects of TOGAF.
