The meeting agenda, presentations, and detailed minutes of these proceedings are available from the Architecture Forum members' web site.

Summary

In this workshop the members of the Architecture Forum progressed work on TOGAF Version 9, and in addition they received reports on a number of ongoing projects.

TOGAF9 Product Marketing

Graham Bird, The Open Group VP Marketing, gave an update on the marketing of TOGAF8 and on plans for the effective product marketing of TOGAF9.

The Open Group key market messages are now: Architecture, Boundarylessness, and Certification - ABC.

Many organizations around the world are using TOGAF8, but it was essential to collate effective case studies of TOGAF8. Architecture Forum members can help by representing their organizations at other conferences and featuring The Open Group and TOGAF.

More volunteers were invited for the marketing working group that has been set up to help in the marketing of TOGAF9.

ADM TOGAF9

This part of the workshop was structured around the following themes identified for TOGAF Version 9:

  • Architecture Development
  • Architecture-based Transformation
  • Architecture Deployment
  • Architecture Value Realization
  • Architecture Management

There were presentations and/or project reports from:

  • Architecting-The-Enterprise
  • CGI
  • Metaplexity Associates
  • Real IRM
  • The Open Group

In addition to the TOGAF9 ADM, there were substantial discussions on TOGAF9 Product Marketing and the future of the Standards Information Base.

Plans for the further development of TOGAF9 were agreed, with a view to having a beta draft available for review at the next meeting in San Francisco.

Architecture  Building Blocks

Bill Estrem of Metaplexity Associates presented the work that he and Ian McCall of IBM are jointly leading on extending the Standards Information Base to a Building Blocks Information Base, as a repository of information on architecture building blocks, reference models, and architecture patterns.

Certification

James de Raeve, The Open Group VP of Certification, gave an update on plans for the development of The Open Group certification programs in the Architecture field, including the setting up of a certification program for the IT Architecture profession within the IT industry, and plans for extensions to the existing TOGAF certification program.

DODAF/TOGAF Harmonization Update

The DODAF/TOGAF Synergy project team, under the leadership of Rolf Siegers of Raytheon, has been working to align the TOGAF Architecture Development Method with the products of the DODAF framework, with leading experts from both fields seeking to establish synergy between the two frameworks.

Judith Jones of Architecting-The-Enterprise gave an update on the work of this project team, including plans to develop a detailed mapping between the two frameworks as a White Paper later this year.

MDA/TOGAF Harmonization Update

This work involves collaboration between three separate consortia - The Open Group, OMG, and the Integration Consortium. David Jackson of IBM is leading the Architecture Forum's involvement in this work, with Ed Harrison of Data Access Technologies (a member of both The Open Group Architecture Forum and OMG) acting as the chair of the joint group.

On Friday 29th April John Spencer, Director of the Architecture Forum, gave an update on this joint initiative.

The Integration Consortium holds its Summit meeting at Banff in May 2005, where the leveraging of this work by the Integration Consortium will be discussed. The groups also plan to come together at The Open Group Architecture Practitioners Conference in New York in July.
