The major event of the week was the formal launch of TOGAF
Version 9, representing the culmination of several years' work by
the members of the Architecture Forum.
During the launch event, members who contributed significantly
to the development of TOGAF 9 and the first organizations to
take out a commercial license for TOGAF 9 were recognized by
Allen Brown, President & CEO, The Open Group.
At the start of the Architecture Forum meeting, it was
announced that Chris Forde, Chairman of the Forum in 2007 and
2008, was unable to continue in this role because of other
business commitments. The Forum expressed its thanks and
admiration for the way in which Chris has transformed the way
the Forum operates.
There were a number of working groups and standing committee meetings
before the start of the full Architecture Forum meeting:
- Architecture Forum Strategy Working Group
- Certification Standing Committee
- TOGAF Case Studies Project
- TOGAF Localization Project
Each of these groups reported back within the structure of the
Architecture Forum meeting.
The ADML Working Group was terminated, because its activities
are now
being addressed by the ArchiMate Forum.
Topics covered during the formal part of the Architecture Forum
meeting included:
Len Fehskens,
Architecture Forum Director, reported.
Membership in
the Architecture Forum grew by a net 47 to 209 by the end of 2008.
Garry Doherty, TOGAF Product Manager, reported.
The launch of
TOGAF 9 was the major event in the previous quarter. In the period
leading up to the launch, there were 30 one-on-one analyst briefings,
which produced an extraordinarily positive response.
The primary target for 2009 is to deepen the
penetration of TOGAF 9.
The Open Group South Africa Proposals
Paul van der Merwe, Real IRM,
reported on progress on a series of activities being undertaken by
members of The Open Group in South Africa.
Nine specific projects were
described, in terms of their objectives, deliverables, description of
change, participating members, and forward action plan:
- SIB refresh
- Strategy
- EA Management
- Process versus Method Elements
- EA as Enabling Discipline
- Architecture Skills Framework
- Architecture Governance
- Architecture Domains
- Project Lifecycle
A working group was created to enable all members of
the Forum to monitor and contribute to the work.
Terry Blevins, Mitre and Chair of the
Certification Standing Committee, reported.
There continues to be strong growth in the number of
TOGAF 8 certifications:
- TOGAF 8 Certified: 8699 individuals (+100% in
12 months)
- TOGAF 8 Training: 36 courses (+50% in 12 months)
- TOGAF 8 Professional Services: 10 services (+25%
in 12 months)
- TOGAF 8 Tool Support: 15 products (+36% in 12
months)
Almost 100 individuals from training organizations
participated in the beta trial of the TOGAF 9 examinations. The
examination will be live via trainers in March and through the Prometric
channel around 30 days later.
Architecture Forum Strategy Working Group
Janine Kemmeren, Getronics and Chair
of the Strategy Working Group, reported.
Eight programs are proposed, the first two to be
initiated immediately:
- Forum Organizational Program
- TOGAF Program
- Internal and External Collaboration Program
- EA Body of Knowledge Program
- Marketing Program
- Globalization Program
- Architecture Practices & Profession Program
- EA Professionalization Program
Full details are available in the strategy paper
available to members of the Architecture Forum.
A target state focus for the Strategy Working Group
was agreed to be "Broadening scope of activities within the Architecture
Forum from EITA to EA". Next steps will be to relate the programs
proposed to this focus and establish value propositions.
Garry Doherty, TOGAF Product Manager,
reported.
The original objective of taking APC presentations and
converting them into case studies has not worked. More than 100 have
been examined, 12 in detail. The source materials were designed as
presentations and do not contain sufficient quality to act as the basis
for case studies.
The revised plan is to work with partners to build
true case studies. Three potential partners have been identified.
Bob Weisman, Build the Vision, Inc. and
Chair of the Information Architecture Working Group, reported.
The long-term objective is an Information Architecture section in a future
version of TOGAF.
Recent progress has involved external co-ordination
with the Data Management Association and the Object Management Group to
establish the scope of the future TOGAF Information Architecture and to
gain consensus.
There is considerable overlap with the work of other
Forums/Working Groups in The Open Group (Semantic Interoperability,
UDEF, and SOA) that needs to be integrated.
Judith Jones,
Architecting-the-Enterprise and Chair of the Localization Project in
2008, reported.
As a result of the work of the Localization Project in
2008, processes for localization have been put in place and there are
plans to translate the TOGAF 9 Pocket Guide in 5 or 6 languages.
This activity has now been transferred to a Standing Committee, representing the ongoing nature of localization.
Hans van den Bent, Getronics and
Chair of the new Localization Standing Committee, proposed some
principles for localization activities:
- Primacy of principles
- All existing principles of the Architecture Forum
are inherited
- Equality of languages and cultures
He proposed adding the web site to the scope of
localization activities.
TOGAF Adoption Strategy Working Group
Mike Turner, Capgemini and Chair of
the Adoption Strategy Working Group, reported on the activities of this
new working group that met for the first time in San Diego immediately
prior to the Forum meeting.
The group is seeking to establish "profiles"
explaining how to adopt TOGAF in different configurations. Five TOGAF
configurations have been identified:
- TOGAF for enterprise management and portfolio
management
- TOGAF for management of sub-contracted change
delivery
- TOGAF for change programs
- TOGAF for change projects
- TOGAF for small to medium-sized enterprises
Andrew Josey, The Open Group,
presented a report from this project which is a joint initiative of The
Open Group and the TeleManagement Forum.
Three complementary work streams are under consideration:
- TOGAF/NGOSS Reference Architecture
- TOGAF Architecture Continuum mapping to NGOSS
- TOGAF SOA Forum work mapping to NHOSS TNA and
contracts model
People are allocated to each of these task and plans
are in place.
Eric Proper, Vice-chair of the ArchiMate Forum,
provided an overview of the objectives and contents of the ArchiMate
language (pronounced ark-ee-m8).
Version 1.0 of the ArchiMate language was approved by
the Board of The Open Group on February 6 2009. The formal launch is
planned for April 2009.
SOA Working Group
Chris Harding, The Open Group
Director of the SOA Working Group, reported:
- The SOA Working Group has reservations about the
SOA material in TOGAF 9. Target is to replace this with an SOA/TOGAF
Practical Guide.
- Members of OASIS, OMG, and The Open Group met in
San Diego to discuss prioritization and positioning of ongoing SOA
projects.
- The SOA Source book is now content complete.
Work continues on a number of projects:
- Ontologies for SOA
- SOA Governance
- SOA/TOGAF Practical Guide
- SOA Reference Architecture
- Service-Oriented Infrastructure
- SOA and Security
- Information Architecture
- Legacy to SOA (L2SOA)
- SOA Maturity Model
- SOA Japan Working Group
Ian Dobson, The Open Group, and
Mike Jerbic, Trusted Systems Consulting Group,
presented ideas for improving the security content of TOGAF.
The main topic is the opportunity for alignment
between TOGAF and Collaboration Oriented Architecture (COA), developed
by the Jericho Forum.
It was agreed that this topic deserves more attention.
Half a day will be allowed for this at the next meeting in London.
Relationship between the Architecture Forum and the
Enterprise Architecture Practitioners Conference
Paul van der Merwe, Real IRM, led an informal survey
and discussion about the relationship between the Architecture Forum and
the organization of Enterprise Architecture Practitioner Conferences.
It was agreed that the Forum should take a more
proactive role in planning EAPCs and that there needs to be more
co-ordination to avoid clashes between EAPC sessions and Forum
activities.
Vision for Enterprise
Architecture
Walter Stahlecker, Fellow of The Open Group, made a
brief presentation addressing the need to broaden the scope of
Enterprise Architecture to position The Open Group as "leader and
integrator" for Enterprise Architecture.
