Semantic Interoperability
Working Group
Objective of Meeting
This was a members-only meeting of the Semantic Interoperability
Working Group. Its aim was to progress the work of the group.
Summary
The Semantic Interoperability Working Group meeting had been
preceded by:
The agenda for the Working Group meeting itself included
Enterprise Information Architecture, the
UDEF Semantic Interoperability Challenge, the UDEF Registry,
the UDEF document set, Information Architecture for SOA, and
Semantic Interoperability Working Group planning.
The main conclusions were reached in the sessions on
Enterprise Information Architecture and Information Architecture for
SOA,
the second of which was a joint meeting with the SOA Working Group. These built
on the
output of the Workshop on Semantics for Enterprise Architecture.
The main conclusions were:
- The findings of the Workshop should be supplemented
by discussion of semantic conflicts, discussion of the maturity
and complexity of semantic components, and descriptions of
additional building blocks.
- Information architecture should be addressed in the TOGAF ADM
at a number of points, which were
agreed in principle.
A meeting of The Open Group Board, which took place
separately at the conference,
approved publication of Version 1.03 of the UDEF.
Outputs
This report and the detailed minutes (available to
Working Group members) are the principal outputs
of the meeting.
Next Steps
The Semantic Interoperability Working Group will prepare
a White Paper on Semantics for Enterprise Architecture, building
on the output of the Workshop, and incorporating the conclusions
of the meeting.
The Semantic Interoperability Working Group will prepare
a draft description of the steps required in the TOGAF ADM
to address information architecture in the context of SOA.
A meeting will be arranged, possibly in Glasgow just before The Open Group conference that will take place
there in April, to discuss this draft. The conclusions of this
meeting will be input to the SOA/TOGAF Practical Guide project.
Work will continue to establish the basis of the UDEF Semantic
Interoperability Challenge, to define
an architecture for the UDEF Registry, and to produce the UDEF
document set.
A draft of Version 1.04 of the UDEF will be prepared for formal
review, with the aim of achieving publication in March.
Work will continue on the different language versions of the UDEF.
It is hoped that the first non-English version (the Dutch version)
will be completed and reviewed by the April conference.
