All Members' Meeting

Objective of Meeting

All Members of The Open Group are members of either the Customer Council or the Supplier Council.

In our All Members' meetings, the Customer Council and Supplier Council join together to invite members from all Forums and Working Groups of The Open Group to share issues and concerns that are of common interest - across all Forums and Working Groups.

Summary

The meeting was chaired by Ben Calloni (see slides).

Introduction of New Officers

Customer Council:

  • Chair: Ben Calloni (Lockheed Martin)
  • Vice-Chair: Alan Doniger (Energistics)
  • Third Customer representative on Governing Board: John Anton (Kestrel Technology)

Supplier Council:

  • Chair: Chris Greenslade (Clars)
  • Sam Ceccola (BEA Systems)

Forum Representatives to Customer & Supplier Councils

Forum representatives ensure an effective channel for sharing issues between the Customer and Supplier Councils and Forum members. By default, as presented in the October 2006 Conference (Lisbon), Forum/WG vice-chairs are called upon as the representatives to the Councils, unless they appoint other members to fill this role.

Action: The Members Councils secretary will call on vice-chairs for all Forums and Working Groups to participate in a Customer Council steering committee teleconference or Supplier Council steering committee teleconference, as appropriate, by the end of February 2007.

Conference Dates and Themes for 2008

Alan Doniger presented the proposed dates for The Open Group conferences in 2008. Venues are being decided at the present time and will be announced on The Open Group web site as soon as these are confirmed.

What makes a Forum/Working Group Effective?

The Customer and Supplier Council officers have launched an initiative to support improving the value of membership, aimed at making members participation a richer experience. They issued a call on January 24 to all Forums and Working Groups, asking for feedback aimed at:

  • Capturing the key characteristics that make a Forum/Working Group effective in delivering value to its members
  • Collecting feedback on how we should measure the value that each Forum/Working Group produces, for example:
    • Number of deliverables
    • Number of downloads of published deliverables
    • Number of deployments or adoptions or implementations of deliverables
    • Number of members attending meetings
    • Number of projects underway
    • Others?

The prime deliverable from this initiative will be support to Forums/Working Groups on common and subject-specific characteristics for providing best value. A further outcome could be a Guide to Best Practice for Forums/Working Groups on how to deliver best value to their members.

Several Forums/Working Groups were almost ready to discuss this, but in the interests of effective use of available time it was decided to collect their feedback by email over the next few weeks and to make review of this the key agenda item for the respective steering committees of the Supplier Council and Customer Councils.

Action: The Members Councils secretary will ensure the prime agenda item on the Councils steering committee teleconferences around end-Feb 2007 is feedback from Forum/Working Group Chairs on what makes their Forum/Working Group effective and how they measure this.
