Grid Enterprise Services Forum:
IPv6 (Open Session)
Objective of Meeting
The principle objective of this open session was to
understand the requirements and blockers associated with delivering
IPv6 in the Network Centric Enterprise Services architecture of the US DoD. This session placed particular emphasis
on the subject of profiles and certification.
Summary
At the last Members' Meeting of The Open Group, in New Orleans (Oct
04), the participants of the Grid Enterprise Services IPv6 open session
recommended that a small working group be formed to address the need of
developing a strawman set of profiles that define what it means to be
"IPv6 capable". Since that time, The Open Group has been working with
members of the DoD IPv6 Standards Working Group, Army CERDEC IPv6 team,
and others in developing a proposed set of "IPv6 Capable" Product
Standards (profiles) that it believes meets Industry and the US
Government requirements. As part of The Open Group’s San Francisco
Members' Meeting, the Grid ES Forum conducted a one-day workshop on a
proposed set of "IPv6 Capable" Product Standards. The intent of this
first public meeting was to present the results of current efforts and
to go beyond basic "IPv6 Capable" definitions and explain in detail
what protocols are currently perceived as necessary for various IPv6
devices and capabilities.
Outputs
A strawman draft of an "IPv6 Capable" definition was produced
that identified all major sections.
Next Steps
A joint agenda will be developed by The Open Group, members
of the DoD IPv6 Transition Office, and members of the NAv6TF to produce
certifiable IPv6-capable devices suitable for operation in the Network
Centric Enterprise Services architecture of the US DoD. Part of this
agenda may include the formation of additional workgroups and a future
IPv6 technical conference.
The effort will continue on developing a Product Standard
that defines what it means to be "IPv6 capable".
The Open Group will present to the DoD IPv6 Transition
Office answers to the questions raised in the presentation reviewing
the current proposed strawman "IPv6 Capable" Product Standard.
