Presentation

The quest to apply "Architecture" holistically

The presentation begins with the implications of addressing architecture of an entire enterprise. A Transformation Continuum that drives enterprises' evolution is described as context for a general concept of architecture suitable for the whole enterprise as well as for subset concerns.

This is followed by consideration of using TOGAF for IT and of possible TOGAF adaptations for use with the whole enterprise. Commonalities and differences resulting from these different points of view are shown: TOGAF currently has a model differentiating IT and "business" (the latter referring to all of an enterprise outside IT), while a model of the whole enterprise shows how a multitude of peer concerns like IT, brand, people, production, etc. can be addressed while preserving most of the TOGAF ADM. This is followed by definitions for enterprise, architecture and the description of a new meaning for "business".

Overall this presentation is intended as a basis for evolving scope and content of TOGAF and the Architecture Profession to cover the enterprise in a broader sense than today. The presentation builds on TOGAF and on work by The Open Group's Business Architecture Working Group, Len Fehskens and the presenter.
