Presentation

Case Study: I aligned SOA with EA What Next?

This presentation describes a real life experience of aligning SOA and EA highlighting key areas of gaps and strategies/techniques and tactics to address them.

Business Opportunity/ Drivers: An exciting time for the ccustomer with a fresh new look by adding new sales channels to existing high street stores by driving business and IT transformation and going “DIRECT” to customers. Further drivers included Service Convergence, Regulation and Targeting a larger customer base.
Challenges: Lack of clear enterprise architecture and business principles, limited as-is architecture artefacts and SOA selection made without any basis.

The approach involved: influencing the creation of relevant business strategy, formulation of IT strategy, building and tailoring an EA framework, establishment and normalisation of the EA function, aligning SOA and EA by drawing synergies between various business functions, in adherence to EA principles and then realising SOA within this context to help with the realisation of the business goals in a phased manner.

What happened next after aligning SOA and EA? Other problems had to be addressed like master data management, products, and other “elementary” business or technical problems. Having already aligned SOA and EA, did that make it any easier solving the “elementary” problems? The answer is yes and the presentation will show how.

The result was that the client organisation was able to introduce and realise new product lines and value propositions with minimal effort and disruption of the business by going direct to customers through various sales channels in addition to improving their cost of ownership of operationally running the retail stores

Audience: Enterprise Architects, IT Architects, Project Managers, Technical Managers, CTOs

Key takeaways:-
1. Real experience insights in aligning SOA with EA
