The demand for encryption of email is growing rapidly, to protect commercially sensitive information and to meet legal requirements for privacy. The Messaging Forum is investigating a number of different email encryption scenarios, including both client-to-client and secure messaging gateways and WEB based secure email.

Achievements to date

Secure Messaging Challenge: In 2002, The Open Group Secure Messaging Challenge resulted in the successful demonstration of the exchange of highly encrypted eMail between products from multiple vendors.

Architecture for Secure Messaging: The Messaging Forum at its meeting in April 2003 identified the need for an overall architecture that integrates the different approaches to secure messaging. The subsequent meeting in July 2003 established the framework for this activity.

Secure Messaging Gateway Certification: The Open Group and Mass Health Data Consortium (MHDC) have agreed to work together on the development of a certification program for Secure Messaging Gateways

Forward Plan

Secure Messaging Gateway Certification: A joint working group has been created with its own working area. The next meeting is on 16th/17th September in Waltham, MA.

Architecture for Secure Messaging: A first draft architecture document is under development.

The next meeting of the Messaging Forum will feature a liaison and communication session. Many other organizations with an interest in Secure Messaging have been invited to participate.
