 BUSINESS SCENARIOS

What is a Business Scenario?

The development of a business scenario is a formalized way to descrive a problem as the basis for planning how to address the problem. A business scenario:
  • Defines the problem to be addressed in a business context
  • Provides an ideal vehicle for initiating any project
  • Defines a template to make sure that all of the important information is captured and presented in a way that is meaningful to business
A business scenario describes:
  • A business process, application or set of applications that can be enabled by a solution
  • The business and technology environment
  • The people and computing components (the “actors”) who execute it (now and in the future)
  • The desired outcome of proper execution
A business scenario:
  • Captures business requirements
  • Describes the current system
  • Sets targets for the future
The business scenario process is part of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF).

How does a Business Scenario work?

A business scenario involves a series of steps:
  • Identify, document and rank the problem driving the scenario
  • Identify the business and technical environment of the scenario and document in scenario models
  • Identify and document the desired objectives (think SMART)
  • Identify the human actors and their place in the business model
  • Identify the computer actors and their place in the technology model
  • Identify and document roles, responsibilities and measures of success per actor
  • Check for “fitness for purpose” and refine where necessary
Typically, there will be three cycles of this process:
  • Discovery: During which the original problem is identified and a baseline, incomplete business scenario is created by one-on-one discussions between the architect developing the scenario and the organization(s) who originally identified the problem.
  • Analysis: One or more group workshops during which the members of the Messaging Forum provide additional information and identify potential solutions.
  • Review: Organization(s) who may be stakeholders in delivery of the solution are invited to review the scenario description and the organization(s) who identified the original problem are invited to confirm that their problem is correctly described.
What happens next?

Once the Business Scenario is complete, the Forum must identify whether there is a role for the Forum in delivery of the solution. This could include
  • Issuing a vendor challenge
  • Developing a standard
  • Developing a certification program
  • Working with other organizations who may have a role in delivery of the solution
