The vendor challenge approach is built around the identification of a real user problem and the size of the market opportunity for vendor(s) able to deliver an acceptable solution to the problem. The vendor community is then challenged to develop and demonstrate a solution within the timescale set by the users. Once vendors have accepted the challenge, the Messaging Forum provides support for the joint working involved and provision for demonstration and publication of the results.

The Business Scenario approach, developed as part of The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) describes a business problem in a business context. An essential element of the Business Scenario is the definition of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Timebound) objectives which describe the desired outcome. The Messaging Forum uses the Business Scenario approach to identify areas where the Forum can contribute to addressing an identified problem and as the basis for vendor challenges.

The Messaging Forum believes that the only way to achieve its mission is by using an Open Systems Architected approach that identifies the components of the electronic messaging system and the interaction between those components defined in terms of standard interfaces. The Messaging Forum is contributing to the overall continuum of architectures through the development of a series of Common Systems Architectures that define the electronic messaging system.

The Messaging Forum meets face-to-face around 4 times per year. The majority of these meetings are aligned with quarterly meetings of The Open Group to give members the opportunity to attend the major themed plenary sessions organized by The Open Group.
Selected sessions within Forum meetings are open meetings intended to get additional input to the work of the Forum and to broaden awareness of the achievements of the Forum. Working sessions are restricted to members of the Messaging Forum only.
Recognizing the cost of travel and the commitment of time required for face-to-face meetings, the Forum makes extensive use of e-Mail and the Web, including restricted e-mail distribution lists and password controlled access to areas of The Open Group Web site.
The Open Group takes the privacy of its members very seriously. It does not pass e-mail addresses to any other organization and does not allow mail to be posted to restricted e-mail distribution lists by anyone who is not a member of the appropriate list.
Supporting face-to-face meetings, the Forum makes extensive use of virtual meetings. There are short teleconferences two or three times per month to monitor progess on work activities. Where necessary, there are supplemented with web services (WEBEX or similar).
Many of the face-to-face meetings of the Forum also include provision for remote participation by those unable to attend in person.
