Towards a federated learning environment for three Dutch universities

In 2007 the three Dutch Universities of Technology (Delft, Eindhoven and Enschede) founded the 3TU.Federation, with the purpose of strengthening their international position in eduction and research. Currently there are 5 joint 3TU. Masters programmes. In 2006 the IT- and educational departments of the universities joined forces to create a federated virtual learning environment. This environment will be based on  the introduction of functionally identical services in the student portals. Each university will use a service bus to distribute service requests to its own legacy systems in  the backoffice, as well as across universities. The Archimate modelling language has been used to model the processes which have to be supported. A proof of concept will be realized in the autumn of 2009.
