Andrew Hately joined IBM South Africa’s Software Group in 2008 and is currently the Technical Lead of the South Africa Software Solution Lab.  Andrew leads a high performance technical team focused on enablement, innovation, and knowledge transfer related to IBM Software solutions across Africa.

From 1999 to 2008, Andrew worked in the IBM Software Strategy group in the US.  He was responsible for standards strategy and was a member of several international standards organizations.  Andrew was the co-editor and co-chair of several industry standards efforts and has represented IBM in several efforts at OASIS, The Open Group, DMTF and other consortia.  As part of the Software Strategy group, Andrew also led software development and reference implementation efforts relating to emerging technologies and Web services.    

Andrew co-chairs IBM’s Sub-Saharan Africa Software Architecture Board and is a member and is a regular speaker at industry conferences on the subjects of Cloud computing, innovation, standards, Web services and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA).  Andrew holds several patents related to software design and architecture. His primary interest is in new software solutions and service management principles to solve industry and business problems.

The impact of Cloud and SOA on an IT organization

In 2008, the business concept of cloud computing was recognized as a true market transformation in the IT industry. The concept of infrastructure, platform and software as a service clouds are becoming widely accepted as the deployment models of the future. The focus is now on how to solve critical technology and business issues using cloud computing and deciding how cloud computing fits in an enterprise architecture.
 
This session will discuss business benefits and challenges related to cloud computing based on use cases and deployments of the technology.  How cloud computing and SOA is changing the expectation of business stake holders and will be discussed in this session along with the necessary process and organizational changes to derive value from the technology shift.
