The Future Store Initiative: A Boundaryless Information Flow Challenge for Tomorrow’s IT Architects
Increasingly companies turn towards collaboration with other companies to obtain a competitive advantage over their competitors. An example is the Future Store Initiative: a network of companies that have come together to create the retail store of the future. A diversity of new technologies is put in place in the store. This collaborative effort has shown the importance of IT architecture for helping to create a boundaryless flow of information between companies. It also taught some other lessons for IT architects, namely the need to link IT architecture to business architecture and the need for IT architects to work across organizational boundaries. With the increase in intercompany collaboration, the IT architect of the future will need to meet these challenges in order to profit from the many new opportunities that interfirm collaboration presents to the IT sector.
