A Reference Catalog for Practicing Architects

Jean-Claude Franchitti
Chief Architect, Cognizant Technology Solutions, USA

Purna Roy
Principal Architect, Cognizant Technology Solutions, USA

The process of defining a target architecture based on a business vision and known requirements often relies on the personal knowledge and experience of the architect. As a result, both the process and its outcome become dependent on the architect. This presentation is about a Reference Catalog that offers resources to make the process of defining a target architecture more systematic, and the outcome more uniform. The vision proposed for the Reference Catalog is that of an extensible database of candidate catalog entries that can be selected and further clustered together by practicing architects as they piece together a target candidate architecture. The intended audience includes Enterprise/Solution Architects, IT Managers and Senior Executives. The intended takeaways are:

  1. Target Architecture Definition – A systematic approach
  2. A data model for Architectures, Building Blocks, Views and Artifacts
  3. Benefits of cataloging Usage Metrics on Architectural Building Blocks, Patterns, and Complete Architectures
