Presentation
Lessons learnt from the Virtual Debit Card product for PayPal The lessons learnt in defining the architecture and designing for PayPal's VDC project (mentioned in BusinessWeek's article: Google's eBay Challenge) centre around the initial obscurity that surrounds a layered architecture. While the capabilities of and within each layer might be fairly understood, the nature of their interaction is seldom known. The VDC project had several moving components (the card number generator which sits on a remote desktop, the number generator's server, PayPal servers, etc.) and required a lot of re-designing and re-architecting in order to finally bring it to a successful launch.
