Roles based approach to Enterprise Architecture Modeling
As enterprises grow, functionality and information get duplicated and
reuse occurs in an unstructured way if at all. Individual systems do not
integrate well, conflict with one another and cause each other to fail.
Costs skyrocket because of similar products from different vendors, or
even simply different versions of the same product, purchased and then
operated within production. Although each individual project may be very
successful, as a portfolio they may have serious challenges. It doesn't
have to be this way with proper modeling of the enterprise architecture.
Common techniques that enable software architecture efforts include
frameworks such as the Model-Driven Architecture(MDA) and the Zachman
Framework (ZF). While each one has its strengths none of them captures the
business-oriented as well as technical perspectives like the roles based
approach to Enterprise Architecture Modeling. IBM's Rational Software is a
roles based open standard (eclipse) tool for Enterprise Architecture
Modeling that enables integration, flexibility, and extensibility in
complex systems through a single platform. It serves as a foundation for
the broader ecosystem that makes the IBM Rational SDP viable to many users.
