Introducing
Architecture to the Enterprise - the Business Case for Architecture
The ICT department of a European Bank introduces in 2003 a new project lifecycle
for ICT development. In this lifecycle the emphasis is expressed for both effectiveness
and efficiency. As a consequence of the implementation of the new lifecycle,
a stronger need arises to adopt a common method for the pre-study phase, focusing
on effectiveness. Since this is not the Bank's core activity, that method has
been sought in the market place. It is the ambition of the Bank to attain a
professionalism at the level of suppliers in the market, which in turn is expected
to improve business-ICT alignment. Thus the Bank has expressed the need for
a flexible architecture method. A Service Based Approach is seen as critical
for success.
Capgemini has been one of the three short listed suppliers.
Since the end of 2003 Capgemini started the venture together
with the Bank. Last November this culminated in a large proof
of capability of the Bank's 20 professionals at the Capgemini
University at Les Fontaines in France. This could not take
place without the teamwork Capgemini has demonstrated in its approach, between
the different disciplines that are required for such a challenge.
In this presentation the business case will be given, and
the approach and lessons learned will be expressed. Also,
major pitfalls will be highlighted, and how the Capgemini
Collaborative approach has contributed to the challenge of
the Bank. The case has been evaluated with all stakeholders
that have participated during the process. From the first
steps onwards it also reviews several innovative ways to
develop the architecture capability.
