How the Data Model is
Integrated into Enterprise Architecture
The analogy to the game of chess is useful when following the Zachman Framework
to design Enterprise Architecture. Both endeavors require skill, experience
and patience. The Zachman Framework’s prescribed design artifacts are "chess
pieces" that must be deftly coordinated. But consider which piece dominates
the game and provides the most benefit to the Enterprise Architect. Among the
pieces that populate the Zachman Chessboard is the Data Model. As the Data
Model evolves from Conceptual to Logical to Physical, it facilitates the development
of Business Objectives, Formal Business Rules and Technical Requirements. These
in turn influence all other design artifacts. For this reason, the author,
who with over twenty years of successful implementations, suggests that the
Data Model is the Queen of the Zachman Chessboard.
