TRACK: Semantics for Enterprise Architecture
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 — 9.00 - 10.30

Real World Use of Semantic Modeling

In this talk, the authors will examine the use of standards based meta-meta-models as a way of translating existing meta models such models expressed UML into the semantic web technology of OWL-DL. We will use this approach to show how assets in three different enterprise asset domains: Industry model assets, software patterns asset and legacy (Brownfield) assets can be treated in a consistent and coherent fashion. In particular we will focus on the IT asset management in the insurance industry and show how these assets can be provisioned in the context that they are need. We will also look at using the using semantic model to do more advance analysis of the data than would be possible with relational database, such as reasoning, inferencing and validation.

Dr Raymond Ellis, Senior Software Developer, IBM
Raymond EllisDr. Raymond Ellis is a senior software developer in the Advanced Technology Team in IBM Software Group, Industry Solutions Development. He has an interest in Model-Driven Architecture (MDA) and semantic net technologies. Dr. Ellis has worked on semantic data models and their application to complex solution development in multiple industries and is co-leading a project in IBM to apply those models to products in the industrial sector.

Dr. Eoin Lane, Senior Solution Engineer, IBM
Dr. Eoin Lane, senior solution engineer, is the lead for harvesting and developing of application pattern from key IBM SOA engagements and driving those patterns through IBM pattern governance process to accelerate adoption. Eoin also specializes in Model Driven Development (MDD), asset based development and Reusable Asset Specification (RAS) to facilitate SOA development.

9:45 - 10:30 Universal Data Element Framework (UDEF), a Framework Supporting TOGAF Interoperability
This presentation addresses a topic that begins to connect the dots between TOGAF, interoperability and UDEF. The Open Group's vision of Boundaryless Information Flow within and between enterprises will not be achieved until this topic is fully addressed.

Audience:-
Program Managers, Enterprise Architects, Data Architects, Data Modelers

Key takeaways:-
1. A summary of interoperability in the context of TOGAF
2. A brief overview of the UDEF
3. A summary of the role that UDEF plays in achieving interoperability
