Realizing SOAs and the role of The Open Group’s SOA Reference Architecture

Ali Arsanjani, Distinguished Engineer
CTO Business Performance & Service Optimization, IBM

Nikhil Kumar
President and CEO, Applied Technology Solutions, Inc. (ApTSi)

The Open Group’s SOA Reference Architecture (RA) and the Open Group Service Integration Maturity Model (OSIMM) can be effectively used to create organizational SOA RA’s. This presentation has the goal of providing practitioners with an actionable approach to assess and design a real-life SOA, and is based on the presenters real life experience in the realization of SOA RA’s and roles as co-chairs of the SOA RA for the Open Group. In this presentation Nikhil and Ali will present a quick overview of the SOA RA, its key principles, an understanding of how we map from Capability to ABB to SBB, and what it means in the day in the life of a Service and a SOA. Articulating the message to the different stakeholders of the RA in an organization is critical in making the RA an actionable asset. We will illustrate this with an example and use a “day-in-the-life” model of a SOA and a Service, and its mapping to the OSIMM and SOA RA to show how to realize and assess the RA. The “day-in-the-life” model provides a very useful tool for architects and practitioners to view SOA and the RA from different perspectives and communicate decisions to stakeholders, by helping answer the question “what does it mean to me”. Mapping it to the RA and the OSIMM lets us assess and plan the SOA.

Dr Ali ArsanjaniDr. Ali Arsanjani is CTO of SOA Emerging Technologies within IBM Global Services. He leads a team responsible for developing worldwide competency in SOA and increasing delivery excellence of SOA solutions using IBM and non-IBM tools and SOA offerings, most of which he has co-developed. He is responsible for IBM vision, strategy and execution of that strategy in the SOA space of emerging technologies and SOA offerings. He is a hands-on, sought-after architect around the world on IBM's largest accounts. To accomplish this Dr. Arsanjani works with IBM Software Group, Research as well as other parts of IBM Global Business Services to delivery SOA Solutions for clients using IBM tools, technologies and latest SOA offerings.

In his role as CTO for the SOA and Web Services Center of Excellence within IBM Global Services, he and his team specialize in harvesting and developing best-practices for the modeling, analysis, design and implementation of SOA and Web Services. He leads the internal IBM worldwide SOA & Web Services Community of Practice (6000+ members) and is the principal author of the (Service-oriented Modeling and Architecture) SOMA method for SOA as well as other assets, offerings and tools around SOA.

He has been focusing on SOA Tooling with an extension and plug-in to Rational Software Architect called SOMA Modeling Environment (SOMA-ME) which provides tooling support for IBM's SOA Methods and assets for SOA Solution development. This has been described in the August 2008 edition of the IBM Systems Journal. Dr. Arsanjani is engaged in developing SOA competency around the world in multiple industries and countries, working not only to develop teams to support the deployment of IBM tools and assets in the SOA space, but also to engage on a day to day basis with IBM's largest clients.
Dr. Arsanjani not only works in executing a global strategy for GBS but also works to assess and develop tools to support IBM's offerings.

He represents IBM in standards bodies such as The Open Group and is responsible for co-leading the SOA Reference Architecture, CLoud Computing Architecture and SOA Maturity Model standards within that body. Inside of IBM he leads research efforts in emerging technologies, tools and consulting offerings that combine services with the software required to successfully deliver those services, effectively, in a scalable and repeatable fashion across the world.
