Case Study: Enterprise Architecture with Semantic Wikis
Remco de Boer, Consultant, ArchiXL
We present the use of semantic wikis to capture and disseminate architectural knowledge, with an emphasis on the traceability of architectural decisions. Architecture is in essence knowledge work. An architect must gather, process and disseminate all sorts of architectural knowledge: organisation specific knowledge such as strategic goals, architecture principles and architecture models, but also generic knowledge such as standards and reference architectures. Capturing and disseminating this architectural knowledge is a non-trivial task. State of the art semantic technologies allow us to structure architectural knowledge and link organisation-specific architectural decisions to generic reference architectures. Semantic wikis provide support for the meaningful combination of textual statements, such as goals and principles, and more formal models expressed in for instance ArchiMate.
A semantic wiki extends a 'regular' wiki with an underlying knowledge model. This model is a description of the knowledge contained in the wiki; it makes facts and relations in the wiki meaningful. for both man and machine. From this meaning (or 'semantics'), new facts and relations can be derived. Moreover, the semantic structure makes it possible to query the wiki for specific knowledge, to browse the wiki through various cross sections, and to discover otherwise implicit relations between architectural elements. We demonstrate several semantic reference architecture wikis whose contents range from e-government principles to ArchiMate models of generic IT services, and subsequently outline the reuse of this generic architectural knowledge in organization-specific semantic wikis.
Key takeaways:
- There are different types of architectural knowledge, most notably generic and specific architectural knowledge
- Semantic wikis are an interesting platform to capture and disseminate architectural knowledge, since they allow for the meaningful combination of textual and model-based information, e.g., architecture principles and ArchiMate models.
- Semantic wikis can be used for generic reference architecture knowledge bases as well as for organization-specific architecture repositories. Moreover, the two can be linked such that generic architectural knowledge can easily be reused in an organization-specific context.

10-minute Decision Making for Managers Using Architecture Design Sketches
Mark Paauwe, Paauwe Group BV, Netherlands
This interactive presentation will take participants on an exploratory trip of Visual Enterprise Architecture and let them experience alternative ways that durable and sustainable business and IT innovations can be designed and realized in an enterprise. Mark uses eHomeCare, the innovation of home care services at BetterCare, as a case study.
This presentation focuses on:
• Architectural visualizations: the power of sketches, drawings and photographic images over diagrams
• Functional specification of requirements using visualization of elements, functions, capabilities, requirements, quality and performance
• How to create serious design sketches?
• Visualizing and communicating the way concepts work, using principle detail-drawings
• Visualizing elements and components smarter, using an angle-line
• Architectural products - from architecture statement to design book
• Visualizations that support efficient joint imaging, judgments and decision making.
Key takeaways:
1) How to create a sketch of a concept to structure ones vision on strategic topics
2) How to communicate difficult concepts and architecture principles using simple principledrawings and element & component diagrams
3) How to convince stakeholders to choose for a certain solution using innovative communication oriented architecture visualizations of concepts and principles
Mark Paauwe, Paauwe Group BV, Netherlands
Mark is a small business-owner and external PhD student in Visual Enterprise Architecture. Does architectural projects at government agencies and financial institutions as enterprise architect. Specializes in training, coaching and consultancy of architectural visualizations, architecture principles and architecture reviews. Mark worked as consultant / IT-architect at Logica CMG and Capgemini.
