Security Issues for Mobile Internet Users using Wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11b) in Aviation Environments

Matthias Kraner, Predictive Systems

We introduce the issues that a passenger faces traveling by plane. But we focus not only on the phase in the plane but on the whole process. That means we look into the three phases pre-flight, flight and post-flight. At each phase the traveler faces problems of communication with respect of infrastructure, connectivity and security.

The talk discusses:

  • the security threats of Mobile users roaming between different networks
  • the problems of using foreign networks if the mobile terminal is configured in a static way
  • the problems involved of trusting unknown network service providers and network entities

We include a demonstration of how fixed mobile terminals are using different foreign networks.

The Web-browsing will continue and the move will be documented.

This allows to trace and locate users and provides the opportunity to hide the user's identity.

Finally we will present business opportunities for operators and partners in this segment if there were usable standards. Of course we would expect The Open Group to be the forum for that.
